Rhett's Story

Rhett's parents Brad and Brittany Detamore moved to Terre Haute from Gunnison, Colorado in December of 2013 in order to be closer to Brad’s father, Jerry Detamore.  Jerry was diagnosed with ALS in June of 2012 and passed away in September of 2015.  When they moved to Terre Haute Brittany was 20 weeks pregnant with their first child, which would be Jerry’s first and only grandchild.  They were blessed with a beautiful baby boy, Rhett Adam Detamore.  Although they were eager to meet our bundle of joy, Rhett was less enthusiastic, arriving 11 days after his due date on June 11, 2014, weighing 8lbs 7oz.  Rhett was a healthy and strong baby from the moment he was born and he progressed very well throughout his early development.  At about 14 months Rhett was not walking and Brad and Brittany began to suspect Rhett may be behind in his development.  Rhett began physical therapy with Nicole Woodard at Indiana State University (ISU) at 17 months, upon who’s assessment suggested Rhett may need further testing.  Rhett was diagnosed with a neurological condition known as Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) at 18 months.  Nicole has been truly amazing with Rhett, who after two months of physical therapy is showing tremendous improvement.  Brad and Brittany are extremely hopeful that Rhett will continue his linear progression and are so blessed to have found such wonderful support in our community.

What is Periventricular Leukomalacia?

This is damage to the white matter surrounding the brain ventricles usually occurs at birth. It causes the white matter to die which affects the development of speech, feeding, gross motor skills such as crawling/ walking, fine motor skills such as writing, picking up objects. The ventricles will appear significantly larger on imaging which then leads to diagnosis.

Most children that are diagnosed with PVL will also be diagnosed with cerebral palsy(CP). PVL is the reason and CP is the actual diagnosis that describes how the child is being affected. Children with neurological disorders have to have extensive care throughout their developing years including pediatrician, orthopedists for possible surgeries and bracing, neurologist, geneticists, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist usually outpatient and early intervention. Patients typically get services 5 days per week. There are so many services that insurance will not cover or only covers a certain amount and therefore the medical bills can become overwhelming very quickly coupled with dealing with a new diagnosis.

Rhett is an amazing little boy and the wonderful thing about early access to services is the plasticity of the brain. It will develop new pathways and new forms of communication so that Rhett can continue to progress throughout his therapies. Brittney and Brad are resilient parents that have done anything and everything to make sure that Rhett is getting the best possible care. They continually work with him at home, purchase more interactive toys, drive extra time to have a better daycare facility and rehabilitation. It is difficult to imagine what their family is experiencing at this time. Mainly because if watched Brad flip Rhett upside down to play tick tock or if you heard the enthusiasm in Brittney’s voice as she talks about their weekend adventure to the Children Museum, you would never imagine they are struggling with a new diagnosis. The Detamores are a wonderful family that are just as fluid and adaptable as Rhett’s brain but the financial support that we are able to provide will continue to allow them to enjoy their time as a family, take trips that stimulate Rhett’s learning, and have a little less stress on their plate.
